Chasing Snakes 2011
The 3rd Annual Chasing Snakes
10k Road Race & 4k Fitness Walk / Fun Run
Congratulations To Our 2011 Winners
and To All Our Participants!
The 2011 Chasing Snakes 10K Road Race and 4K Fitness Walk on Saturday, March 12, met and exceeded all of our expectations. Sponsored by St. John’s Episcopal Church, this was the third annual run, and the second year with the additional 4K event. Total registrants for both events were over 680! This year, for the first time, all of the awards for the 10K were handmade by local potter Philip Shivell. They were beautiful and set a unique tradition that we will keep for years to come. The 10K event saw the men’s record broken with a time of 33:32. Another first for the 10K this year was chip timing by the State of Franklin Track Club, providing quicker and more exact results for our competitive runners.
Chasing Snakes also “went green this year” by replacing traditional goody bags with informational handouts from sponsors for participants to take as needed. In addition, Culligan provided us with a water wagon at the finish line to avoid using over 800 plastic bottles. These efforts, in addition to the handmade trophies and intense recycling efforts, resulted in the event adding very little to our landfills.
As a result of this year’s event, St. John's will be able to contribute $11,000 to the mission of IHN of Greater Johnson City, a 3rd year increase! Special thanks go out to our sponsors: Southeastern Retina Associates; Anesthesia & Pain Consultants, P.C.; Summers-Taylor, Inc.; Harold Dishner State Farm Insurance Agency; Culligan Water Professionals; Peoples Community Bank; St. Jude Medical; John A. Bullington Company; Rumors Salon; Raymond James Financial Services; Earth Fare; Foot Rx; Ashby P. Clanton, DDS; Blackburn, Childers & Steagall, PLC; and Mary O’Keeffe, MA, LMFT.
None of this could have been possible without the 140+ volunteers that gave of their time that day. They came from St. John's and many other IHN host and support churches, the Northeast Tennessee Mountain Bike Association, Boy Scouts, the Johnson City Police Department, and other area volunteer groups. Thank you, thank you, thank you to all of the volunteers! We hope to continue to grow and can't wait to see you all next year! Until then, may the road rise to meet you.
